Welcome!

My name is Laila (“Night”) Re (“Sun”) and I am a self-published author of three poetry books: Pieces to Peace , Soul Led and Beauty and Love. I was born in Kabul, Afghanistan. I escaped as a toddler with my family from impending civil war to Islamabad, Pakistan as refugees. From the age of five, I was raised in Toronto, Canada. My mother was a journalist in Afghanistan, I give her all credit for my passion growing up reading and writing.

I earned three degrees at York University: Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, Bachelor of Education in Primary-Junior division, and a Masters of Education in Language, Culture and Teaching. My Major Research Paper was titled “Creative Action: Re-claiming Education and Freedom.” In 2016, I contributed a personal story to a anthology titled “The Muslimah Who Fell to Earth“, which shares the stories of 22 Muslim-Canadian women to reflect the diversity of our experiences.

I was involved as an organizer and founder of a few political justice groups on and off campus for several years. You may read one of my political speeches written from that time posted on Sons of Malcolm. I began freelance writing as a news contributor for an alternative, student-run campus newspaper called YU FREE PRESS in 2010. As a grassroots organizer for Afghans for Peace and co-founder of Afghans United for Justice, I co-wrote anti-war articles for major alternative news outlets.

I have co-written two press releases for Ricochet and Rabble addressing racism and sexism against anti-war Muslim women activists in Toronto news media. I also contributed news articles in 2015 to the alternative news site MediaBlackOut-USA. I began self-publishing my poetry collections in 2013 through CreateSpace. My poems have been re-posted by MediaBlackOut-USA and I was one of the women honoured by Dream Defenders annual Women History Month in 2015.

  2. Hey you worthless little ingrate now that the troops have left Afghanistan, and the Taliban is resurgent, are you going back to straighten things out? Or are you going to enjoy the benefits of living in Canada and shitting on your adopted country? Empty little hypocrite.

    • The US-led NATO mission in Afghanistan was never about stopping the Taliban because they let Pakistan continue being the support base, sponsor and sanctuary of Taliban the entire two decades of the war. Taliban is Pakistan – they created this terrorist organization in the 1990s to barbarically occupy and colonize Afghanistan. The Doha deal between USA and Taliban in February 2020 – facilitated by Pakistan and excluded the Afghan government – handed Afghanistan to the Taliban and released 5,000 Taliban prisoners which was why Taliban was able to takeover impossibly fast. The NATO mission ended up replacing Taliban with Taliban. Afghan soldiers were forced to retreat as their country was given to a Pakistan proxy. The elected Afghan government was not only undermined but also back-stabbed, along with all of the Afghan and NATO soldiers who died fighting the Taliban. Afghan allies were also back-stabbed by not safely evacuating them prior to this horribly-planned withdrawal and are now being hunted down by the Taliban. Lets also not forget the thousands of Afghan civilians who were killed as “collateral damage” and the 9/11 victims who died because of Taliban as it is aligned with and in collusion with al-Qaeda. All those against Taliban were backstabbed by USA’s deal with the Taliban. The Taliban are still temporarily exempt from UN sanctions because of USA – they are actually being allowed to fly out some of their leaders to Doha, Qatar today. Canada follows a US-led foreign policy so it is actually the Canadian government who is enabling this Taliban takeover. The only winners here are private military contractors and Pakistan. If you genuinely care about stopping the Taliban, join the call to #sanctionpakistan and support both the exiled Afghan government Acting President Amrullah Saleh and National Resistance Front leader Ahmad Massoud. Listen to Afghans!
